Getting Married As A Gay Couple

Getting married as a gay couple can be a difficult process. There are only a few places where it is legal to get married as a gay couple. In the United States, there is only one state that allows gay marriage and that is Massachusetts. There are a few other countries such as Canada, Spain, and South Africa that allow it as well. There are also alternatives to marriage called partnerships. This is a legal agreement, but will not be the same as marriage.

The first thing you need to do is find a location that allows same sex marriage. Do some research about laws and regulations. Talk with your partner and go over everything as a couple. Discuss whether you want to have a marriage or partnership, where you want to get married, where you will live after you get married, and whether or not to have a prenuptial agreement. It is important that you do all your research. If you were married somewhere where it was legal and then moved to a place where it is not, some places will not recognize it as a legal marriage.

You will need a marriage license and set a date. Once you have chosen the place, you will need a license. Then you will decide if you want a full wedding or just a ceremony. Then pick your place where you wish to get married, whether you want it on a beach, church, or anywhere else.

Same-Sex Marriage Becomes More Mainstream

In five states—Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont—same-sex marriages can be performed that allow same-sex couples to legally married. The District of Colombia also recognizes same-sex marriage, as well as an Oregon Indian tribe known as the Coquilles.

Pretty cool, eh?

With California and other states now in the throes of accepting same-sex marriage, gay weddings are becoming more and more prevalent and public. Famous same-sex couples have come forward and publically married as laws in their states or countries have begun to recognize gay marriage.

Some of these famous couples include, in the US, singer Melissa Etheridge and her partner, actress Tammy Lynn Michaels. In England, Elton John and his partner, David Furnish, were among the very first to be married in a same-sex union/partnership in the UK. The popularity of Elton John’s marriage actually challenged the marriage of Prince Charles in attendance and enthusiasm.

Now that same-sex marriage is becoming acceptable, the fun and joy of planning a wedding for gay/lesbian couples is also on the forefront. One of the great break-throughs is the beauty of wedding rings for a gay couple. Diamond engagement rings can be as simple and elegant or as outrageous and gorgeous as fits the couple’s taste.

Maybe because many same-sex couples have waited so long for a real wedding, their rings of choice seem to truly symbolize each others’ personalities and the long road taken to have their love consummated in a legal ceremony.

Some same-sex couples prefer a simple ceremony—stating their vows in front of witnesses—while other couples have a full ceremony joining together until death-do-you-part. Many couples enjoy splendid receptions where friends and family honor their commitment to each other.

Whatever the couple’s choice, it is a time to rejoice as old prejudices are done away with and couples join together in love and commitment.
